Rental vehicle excess

Policies include cover for rental vehicle expenses if renting a vehicle during your trip. This includes cover for the rental vehicle insurance excess if a rented vehicle is damaged in an accident or stolen. A standard limit of $5,000 is automatically included with the policy, and where required this can be increased to a total limit of $10,000 for an additional premium. The rental vehicle must be rented from a rental company have comprehensive motor vehicle insurance for the period of hire.

Cover is also provided for the cost of returning a rental vehicle to the nearest drop-off location if you are unable to do so as a result of an event that is covered by another section of the policy.

Waiting periods

Policies purchased while travelling

The Australian Travel Plan can be purchased after you have started travelling, however a waiting period of 72 hours would apply during which time there would be no cover under the policy. Cover under the policy will commence after the 72-hour waiting period has expired, and there will only be cover for events first occurring after the 72-hour waiting period.

Policies purchased more than 72 hours before the trip

Where an Australian Travel Plan is purchased more than 72 hours in advance of the trip departure date, cover under the Cancellation or holiday deferment costs section of the policy will be subject to a waiting period of 72 hours. Cover under the section will commence after the 72-hour waiting period has expired, and there will only be cover for events first occurring after the 72-hour waiting period.

Travel to Norfolk Island

From 1 July 2016, Australian health arrangements and laws will extend to Norfolk Island, including Medicare and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. With the introduction of these changes, nib is no longer able to cover medical expenses and medical repatriation for Australian residents visiting Norfolk Island. As a result, travel to Norfolk Island is now covered under the Australian Comprehensive Policy (rather than an international policy).
